In response to State Worker blog user requests, we're continuing to post some of the more noteworthy recent campaign contributions and independent expenditures by state employee unions as we enter the final days of the 2010 election. Here's a list of recent independent expenditures by the California Correctional Peace Officers Association, including a $1.58 million in two installments to oppose GOP gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman.

The controversy over Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman's former housekeeper has become fodder for political ad wars in this closing week of the campaign. The California Correctional Peace Officers Association is pulling no punches in a 30-second spot, shown below, reminding voters of housekeeper Nicky Diaz Santillan, who said Whitman employed her for nine years despite knowing she was an illegal immigrant. Whitman has denied knowing Diaz Santillan was undocumented until she fired the employee in June 2009.

A federal jury hammered the state's correctional officers union on Friday, awarding $10 million in punitive damages in a defamation case. The damages come on top of $2.3 million in actual damages awarded against the California Correctional Peace Officers Association in the same case Monday. The Bee learned of the punitive damages award after U.S. District Court had closed. Plaintiff attorney Daniel Baxter confirmed the details.

California’s politically powerful prison guards union will appeal a $12 million verdict by a federal jury in a defamation and breach of contract case, the union’s lawyer said Saturday.
The jury in Sacramento federal court awarded more than $10 million in punitive damages Friday to former officials of Corrections USA, a California-based national coalition of prison guard unions. That’s on top of $2.6 million awarded by the same jury earlier in the week for financial losses.

A federal jury has slapped the California Correctional Peace Officers Association with a $10 million judgment for punitive damages in Dawe v. CUSA, CCPOA, et al., according to attorney Daniel Baxter, who represented Brian Dawe and two other men in the 3-year-old lawsuit. The jury, which heard the case in Sacramento's federal courthouse, decided that codefendant Corrections USA also must pay punitive damages, but the total for the Auburn-based prison officers coalition is about than $300,000.

In the wake of a pension deal Democratic leaders struck with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, California's prison guards' union has dropped $215,000 to oppose Assemblywoman Anna Caballero's quest for the state Senate...The California Correctional Peace Officers Association has backed Democrat Jerry Brown for governor, but is still stinging from the end-of-session deal between Democratic legislators and Schwarzenegger that essentially authorized the governor to continue furloughs for members of the guards' union until they agree to a new labor contract.

So I've been catching up on my e-mails -- and had a chance to watch the creative "Bobblehead Meg" video from the Calfiornia Correctional Peace Officers Association. The state prison guard union is supporting Jerry Brown for Governor (shocking!). That said, they did up a very entertaining web video that is actually worth sharing -- we love creative stuff, even if we don't always agree with the message...

The state is cutting $1.1 billion from the corrections system as part of the Legislature's approval of the state budget. The cut was announced in a report on the 2010-11 budget released last week by the California Legislative Analyst's Office. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's administration is already considering cuts to corrections officers staffing and implementing a 12-hour workday for the officers in response to shrinking coffers.

The state prison guard union -- technically, the California Correctional Peace Officers Association -- has endorsed Jerry Brown for guv. No huge surprise, but important as the guards still swing a lot of power in their (financial) billy clubs. And they're not reflexively Democrat-backers.

The union representing the state's prison guards rolled out today its endorsement of Democratic gubernatorial nominee Jerry Brown.
